The Future of Infrastructure Investments

Infrastructure is not just about concrete and steel. It's about quality of life for everyday people—their ability to commute safely, access reliable services, and trust that their neighborhoods are resilient in the face of natural disasters. It is the backbone of our communities, where transformative infrastructure projects provide opportunity for all, regardless of one’s background. It is the foundation for enhancing America’s economic competitiveness. It is about the future.

And to build the future that the next generation deserves, we call on each of you to help continue the work to ensure that our elected officials prioritize policies that will revitalize America's infrastructure and strengthen our nation. Here’s why:

Extreme Weather is Putting Aging Sewer Systems to the Test
San Francisco, one of several major cities with a sewage system that can get overwhelmed during storms, has a case concerning water quality violations headed to the Supreme Court. Darren Olson, Chair of ASCE Committee on America's Infrastructure talked with NPR about the challenges that communities like San Francisco are facing in dealing with wastewater and stormwater.

What Mayors Can Learn From Each Other About Infrastructure
Mayors Barbara Buffaloe of Columbia, Mo., and John Giles of Mesa, Ariz., joined Bloomberg Philanthropies Government Innovation lead James Anderson on NPR’s 1A to discuss how the Local Infrastructure Hub is helping their municipalities seek federal funds for critical community priorities and how local leaders are continuing to overcome partisan gridlock to implement the largest national commitment to infrastructure modernization in decades.

Record-Breaking Heat is Wreaking Havoc on America’s Aging Infrastructure
From roads to rails, Summer 2024’s record heat is creating problems for transportation infrastructure, which, much like human health, needs to be regularly maintained to increase the potential for effective rehabilitation and resilience.

Relaunched Program will Help Rural and Tribal Communities Tap Into Cash for Infrastructure Projects
The Greater Arizona Development Authority (GADA) has been relaunched by Gov. Katie Hobbs, providing financial assistance for rural and tribal communities in Arizona to develop or improve publicly owned infrastructure such as roads, water systems, and community centers.

Manchin-Barasso Energy Permitting Bill Advances to Full Senate
ICYMI: Bipartisan legislation aimed at speeding up approvals for new energy projects advanced to the full Senate Wednesday, July 31. The legislation, put forward by Sens. Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), sailed through committee in a 15-4 vote.

TAKE ACTION!

What to do: Imagine A Day Without Water

For ten years, our Steering Committee partners at the Value of Water Campaign have led Imagine a Day Without Water to highlight how the absence of reliable water services would impact our daily lives—exposing the fragility of our systems and the urgent need for improvement. This year, millions of people across the nation will participate in a national day of action aimed at raising awareness about the true value of water in our lives and the need for continued investment in our nation’s water infrastructure.

Join us on October 17 by taking a moment to consider what your day might look like without a shower, a coffee, or a working bathroom. Then visit imagineadaywithoutwater.org to find out how you can add your drop to the bucket.

What to Watch: Cities of the Future

This summer’s blockbuster film is all about infrastructure. Imagine stepping 50 years into the future and finding smart cities designed to be totally sustainable. Award-winning actor and filmmaker John Krasinski narrates Cities of the Future, a new IMAX film produced in association with ASCE.
